Helpful Tips & FAQ's

How is Realtime Court Reporting Used?

Realtime court reporting provides the participants with an instantaneous transcript of the proceedings.  Realtime translation is useful as it allows the participants to read along, mark/annotate, make notes, and address potentially uncommon spellings and phrases  with the reporter, send selected text to remote experts, and communicate with others via instant messaging.  Realtime court reporting is useful to recall what a witness or attorney said, instantaneously, from any web-based device.  Realtime court reporting is useful for accurate readbacks given by the court reporter, and is essentialfor daily turnaround and expedited certified transcripts.

Slow and Steady Wins the Race!

Hold up.  Wait a minute.  It is very important to speak clearly and deliberately, and with a moderate pace.  Try to avoid speaking too rapidly, especially while reading or citing.  Although the realtime verbatim reporter-master is able to write over 200 wpm with over 98 percent accuracy before editing, she cannot write what she cannot hear or understand.  If speakers are too fast or speaking over one another, it will make it difficult for the court reporter to hear, understand, and translate.  The realtime court reporter’s aim is to write what you say during the proceeding, and we do not rely on any backup recordings that may have been made.  Wait for the other person to finish speaking before you speak.  Speak as if you are utilizing a foreign language interpreter, as realtime court reporting is, essentially, realtime translation of the spoken word into text.

I Have Scheduled a Realtime Deposition, What Does the Court Reporter Need?

In most cases, be prepared to supply the realtime court reporter with preparation materials that may include a list of case cites, witness names, special vocabulary associated with the case, and discovery responses.  The court reporter will review and pre-load any pertinent information into her writing system, allowing her to recall complex terms or unusual names.  This results in a faster and more accurate realtime translation to be used during the proceeding.
